BY BRAD LOCKEDaily JournalTruly, the stat sheet does not reveal the abilities of Thomas Webb.He had only three catches this past season - Starkville needed him too much at defensive end - but Mississippi State, Southern Miss and Alabama-Birmingham saw his potential as a tight end, and each offered him a scholarship.Hard as it is to do, Webb is leaving Starkville and will sign with USM today, which is national signing day for football players."I just felt more comfortable at Southern," Webb said. "I know I grew up in Starkville, and it was tempting to stay home, but I liked Coach (Jeff) Bower and the tight ends coach (Randy Butler)."Webb's father, Jody Webb, is an MSU man, but his grandfather, Steve Webb, played at USM.Though he's logged few minutes at tight end, Webb is an impressive specimen at 6-foot-5, 230 pounds. He was a first-team Daily Journal All-Area pick on defense.He expects to contribute early, pointing out that redshirt freshman tight end Shawn Nelson caught 35 passes for 540 yards last season."They're not biased about playing freshmen," Webb said.
