Authorities on Saturday identified the victim in a beating death as Spc. Piotr Szczypka, a 21-year-old Iraq war veteran who had returned from the Middle East in August. Szczypka died early Friday after an attack outside an apartment complex in southern Colorado Springs. He died of multiple factors including a powerful blow to the body, according to the results of an autopsy conducted Saturday. Authorities are holding a suspect in the death, Timothy Parker, 22, who is also a Fort Carson-based soldier. Szczypka’s 15-year-old sister, Meg, said Saturday that he joined the Army along with some friends about two years ago and was hoping to earn money for college. He was initially sent to South Korea with the 2nd Brigade Combat Team and later deployed to Iraq. He kept in touch with his family in Chicago often by phone and sometimes by letters, she said. “We’re pretty sure that it wasn’t so easy when he was in Iraq and all that, but he worked, he was devoted to it,” she said.
