Hyde's wartime experience as a leader of men helped to prepare him for his postwar business career. The son of a successful businessman, Hyde purchased a small iron foundry and expanded the operation by patenting the Hyde windlass. In 1884, he incorporated the business as Bath Iron Works Ltd., which received its first government contract for the construction of gunboats in 1890.
