Born on March 10, 1919, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late Franklin R. Shield Sr. and Margaret West Shield. She was a graduate of Goldey-Beacon College in Wilmington, Del. She was a retired secretary, having worked 33 years with C & P Telephone Company (Verizon) and was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Onancock.
