JOYCE CAROL OATES: 8 p.m. Nov. 15, Belk Centrum, Lenoir-Rhyne College, Hickory. Besides numerous novels and short-story collections, Oates has published several volumes of poetry, several books of plays, five books of literary criticism and the book-length essay "On Boxing." Her novel, "We Were the Mulvaneys," was selected as an Oprah Book of the Month in 2001. A recipient of the National Book Award and the Pen/Malamud Award for Excellence in Short Fiction, Oates is the Roger S. Berlind Distinguished Professor of the Humanities at Princeton University.
