Leming was nominated by his longtime assistant coach, Dennis Walker.Born Jan. 21, 1943, in Indianapolis, Leming is a product of Warren Central High School. He started running track in the seventh grade and until two years ago he was still at it.He didn't go out for cross country until his junior year.A miler as a freshman, his coach soon told him that the mile was hurting his pole vaulting and his running became limit to a leg of the mile relay. As a senior he used a steel pole to vault 11 feet, 11 3/4 inches. That was 1961.After graduation he worked two years in a factory. That convinced him to go to college, but he had no idea for what."I had no idea what career I was headed for," Leming said.
