Petoskey High School senior Kelsie August has received an appointment to attend the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Congressman Bart Stupak, D-Menominee, announced Thursday.High school counselor Tamara Kolodziej said Kelsie was the first student from Petoskey in anyone's memory to have been appointed to West Point.On learning of the appointment, Kelsie told the News-Review today: “I'm almost too thrilled for words.“I fully appreciate the rigorous challenges, commitment, and personal sacrifice that is necessary to become a dedicated leader in the United Stated Army. I have fully counted the costs, and am willing to place ‘Duty, Honor and Country' before all else.”Asked what prompted her to apply to West Point, Kelsie said:“I wanted to play Division I softball in college, and West Point has a pretty good team. That's what caught my attention at first. They also have one of the oldest and best engineering schools in the country, and I hope to study aerospace engineering, so it all fit together nicely.”
