As I looked through the crowd of principals at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association’s annual convention my first thought was, “What are all these people doing here.”There was only one potentially controversial issue and a small agenda to vote on. It seemed like much ado about very little.Looks can be deceiving, though. Like most of us who follow high school sports, the principals were hoping to find out what will happen next as we all rebuild from hurricanes Katrina and Rita.Accurate information regarding the present status and future of many New Orleans area schools has been hard to get. That’s why the LHSAA’s report on storm-affected schools was just as important as anything the principals voted on.It was clear the videotape address by St. Bernard Unified School Principal Wayne Warner touched everyone who saw it. There is talk of making the video available to others and perhaps contacting media outlets, such as Louisiana Public Broadcasting. I hope this happens so more people can see how Warner described his school before, during and after Katrina.Whether Warner intended to sway those who were hoping to eliminate spring football practice is unclear.
