Petty rivalries aside, competition is something that many students at the College may not directly associate with a cappella groups. Sure, almost everyone has heard of “Battle of the Bands,” an event in which campus bands compete and the best is selected, but how many have heard of a “battle” of the a cappella groups? Seriously. Though it might strike those unfamiliar with a cappella as unusual, a cappella groups are just as serious and fierce as any band when it comes to competing, and competing is exactly what six groups will be doing tomorrow at 8 p.m. in Phi Beta Kappa Memorial Hall (sans the “battle of” moniker). This year’s regional quarterfinal of the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella, presented by Varsity Vocals, an organization dedicated to the promotion of a cappella at the collegiate and high school level, will host six competing groups from the southern region. At the event, the groups — which are allotted 12 minutes each (approximately three songs) — will perform before a panel of judges in hopes of winning the coveted top two spots.
