The state of college baseball - The Times and Democrat
South Carolina is known for its Palmetto trees, beaches, mustard-based barbecue and their football prowess. The two major universities in the state are known as football schools, but over the past few years another sport has taken over the landscape.College baseball has now become a sport in the Palmetto state where people sit up and take notice when the season rolls around. The success of the University of South Carolina and Clemson has helped to bring about this change, and South Carolina sent six teams to the NCAA Tournament last season the most of any state in the union. Along with the Gamecocks and Tigers, Furman, Winthrop, College of Charleston and Coastal Carolina all made the postseason. The Chanticleers nabbed a number one seed in the Arizona State regional. Now with 2006 on the horizon, the state of college baseball seems to be on the upswing in the state of South Carolina.The biggest story in South Carolina this season is the Clemson Tigers, who were tapped number two in the country behind defending national champion Texas in the Baseball America preseason poll. The big reason for this is the return of almost every position player from last season’s team.Some - more available
