Chancellor addresses Snead audit - Sand Mountain Reporter
Roy Johnson, chancellor for secondary education in Alabama, said Wednesday that mistakes were made at Snead State Community College, but that the college would suffer no punishment due to a recent audit report. The report in question, which was released Sept. 30 by the Examiners of Public Accounts, cited 10 findings concerning errors made in the school’s business office. “I’ve had our staff review each of those findings and develop responses for each of those findings,” Johnson said. “The good news is there is no indication of wrongdoing.”Most seriously was a finding that dealt with the school not seeking bids for an $182,000 renovation project at the Elrod Hospitality Center. The school was supposed to seek bids for projects totaling more than $7,500 and seek the state Board of Education’s approval for projects exceeding $50,000 in cost, neither of which was done. Snead State President Devin Stephenson also stays in the center about three nights per week, and pays rent of $275 per month. “The further they got onto it, they should have stopped and bid it out and got board approval,” Johnson said. “They made that mistake and have corrected it.”Stephenson stated that as the project continued, additional problems - more available
