A Sisterhood of Support: The Pillars of Civil Rights - Washington Post
Gwen Patton became a youth leader of the Montgomery (Ala.) Improvement Association in the early 1960s. She sensed a kind of ideological shift in the way men judged women in the movement by the time she reached Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University). She was elected student body president in 1965, beating out a half dozen male candidates. "We have always been recognized for our insight and analysis, at least from a student level," says Patton, now an archivist at Trenholm State Technical College in Montgomery.
