FARM MAGAZINE: 2 SCSU students among 25 1890 National Scholars - Orangeburg Times Democrat
Two South Carolina State University students have been named 1890 National Scholars for the 2005 academic school year. Lisa M. McClary of Denmark and Maladee T. Packer of Ridgeland received the 1890 National Scholar award for their work in the service of agriculture. The students were two of 25 scholarships issued this year among hundreds of applicants. The scholarship pays for all expenses including books, tuition, room and board. The scholarship is contingent on the students maintaining a 3.0 grade-point average through the years. The USDA/1890 National Scholars Program is a partnership initiative between USDA and the 1890 Land Grant Institutions and Tuskegee University. Packer said she is set for all three years in terms of finances and will be ready for employment upon graduation. The scholarship also provides summer internships with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.“I don’t have to worry about finding a job because I will be able to work for the USDA,” she said.Packer will look to work at the USDA public relations department.McClary said the scholarship will enable her to attend grad school. Then her plans are to work in the USDA office in Washington as an information technologist.
