HATTIE WYATT CARAWAY BIRTH ANNIVERSARY. Born on this date in 1878, Caraway became a U.S. senator from Arkansas in 1931, when her husband died and she was appointed to fill out his term. The following year she ran for the seat herself and became the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate. She worked for women's rights, supported New Deal policies as well as Prohibition.
