I step out for the laundry, contemplating and planning. Once outside, I feel as though I’ve snuck up on the morning, like I am not supposed to be here when time is still moving slowly with the dawn. I round the corner and am stopped by the sight of two hummingbirds bathing in our fountain. They swirl around each other and perch on the fountain’s edge, dipping their beaks, rustling their wings. I know these hummingbirds, they come for the flowers in our front lawn often, but today, at this hour, they are without their usual apprehension. The scene strikes me as one that is simple, yet full of life, like all that’s perfect in the world is right before me, in the early morning light and approaching warmth, in the swoop of the hummingbirds, soaring undaunted by my face, flashing the brilliant magenta color on their necks. Out here, with the birds, it feels even quieter. There is nothing but the sound of the world living, of “occupation.” Not in the be-here-by-9-paycheck-on-Thursday sense of the word, but in the natural sense of livelihood, of breathing and being.
