Parents seek hospital expansion in memory of infant son - Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (subscription)
Eight weeks premature, Jackson Graves was born with his intestines and other abdominal organs protruding from a ruptured sac that lay outside his body, a defect known as an omphalocele. The 3-pound, 13-ounce infant spent 4 1 /2 months at Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock, undergoing six complex surgeries, including one to fit his swelling organs into a pigskin sac. Jackson’s medical needs went well beyond the standard care provided for other premature babies in the neonatal intensive care unit. Keeping up with the peculiarities of Jackson’s fragile condition challenged even the skilled nursing staff at Children’s Hospital amid a busy nursery, Jackson’s mom, Angie Graves, said. “When a nurse comes in for the very first time, they’ll say, ‘OK, what do I really need to be aware of for tonight’s shift?’ and you think, ‘Oh my gosh, where do I start?’” Graves said. Jackson’s condition worsened and finally ended his life, but the long months the Graveses spent in the hospital nursery made them eager to improve care for babies with complicated ailments like Jackson’s.
