Seed is planted for McDonald House - Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (subscription)
SPRINGDALE — He wasn’t on the course, but the benevolent spirit of Ronald McDonald was ever-present during a fundraising golf tournament Monday at the Springdale Country Club. Corporate and team sponsorships for 43 teams helped raise more than $70,000 in seed money for a Ronald McDonald House to be built somewhere in Northwest Arkansas, says Bill Mathews, president of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Arkoma, which covers western Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma. Mathews and his brother, Walter, also own and operate all the McDonald’s restaurant franchises in Northwest Arkansas. The mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities, also known as RMHC, is “to better the lives of children and their families around the world.” The local chapter has been working to build and support its own Ronald McDonald House, a place where parents of children that are in a hospital can stay at night for little or no fee. “Some parents can’t afford a hotel. They need a place to stay instead of trying to sleep in their cars,” Mathews says. There is a Ronald McDonald House near Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock, but the need is apparent for one in Northwest Arkansas, as well.
