Deer getting a second chance at freedom in Dogwood Canyon - Eureka Springs Times-Echo
There they will remain, free to roam, protected from hunters who might take advantage of their friendly nature, Matzenbacher said.The inquisitive creatures came from the Arkansas Native Plant and Wildlife Center, a non-profit rehab center, located on two acres in the Queen Wilhelmina State Park.Operated under the direction of Thomas Young, an ornithologist and master falconer, the center takes in sick, injured and orphaned animals and birds.”Thomas has been rehabbing for 21 years,“ said Matzenbacher. ”He's licensed to rehab all animals, and is the only person in the state approved by Arkansas Game and Fish Commission to rehab and release bears.”His main focus is birds of prey, including hawks, owls and eagles.”He rehabs a 10-county area, which includes the Ouachita Forest.”This is our first time to take his rehabbed deer, but not our last,“ said Matzenbacher. ”We have an agreement to take all his rehabbed deer in the future. He didn't have a place in the past.“Matzenbacher, an Oak Grove area native, was hired by Dogwood Canyon as a wildlife biologist four years ago, after earning a degree from Arkansas Tech University.He said the fawns he released were listed by the rehab center as ”orphaned/kidnapped.“That classification covers many situations, he - more available
