Eli Whitney principal Moore mulls challenges, opportunities during a dynamic period for trade-school system Business New Haven 10/17/2005 BNH E. Paulette Moore is principal of Eli Whitney Technical School in Hamden, a position she has held since 2000. In that capacity she is responsible for the education of some 570 high school students as well as some 120 adult students training to enter trades. Moore previously as assistant director at Eli Whitney and Bridgeport's Bullard Havens High School. As part of the state's initiative to revitalize technical education, the name of the system has been changed from "Regional Vocational Technical School System" to "Regional Technical School System." In a BNH interview conducted October 6, Moore explains why.Why the name change from 'vocational' to 'technical'?We're much more conscious of where we are with the trades and the importance of academics. The trades have evolved with the use of technology.What does the current curriculum include?The freshmen spend three days in each of the 12 shops as an orientation. Then they choose four shops, from automotive, carpentry, drafting, electrical, information systems, health technology, fashion technology, hairdressing and cosmetology, plumbing and heating, graphics communication, manufacturing technology, and culinary.
