Instead, the German theologian and Lutheran pastor, who symbolizes the meaning of conscience to many, lives on in his writings and the story of a life ended when he was executed at age 39 by his Nazi captors. Bonhoeffer’s end — hanged with a piano wire, naked — came because of his involvement in a web of conspiracy to assassinate his country’s leader, Adolf Hitler. His theological view that the world and God are one helped shape Bonhoeffer’s conclusion that all Germans were implicated in Hitler’s evil and must act, said the Rev. Lisa Dahill of Trinity Lutheran Seminary, who has written about him and translated some of his writings.
