Fewer SJ students college-bound - Stockton Record
Enrollment rates at California State University, Stanislaus, reached record levels this fall, but the number of college-bound students from San Joaquin County has fallen.CSU Stanislaus has 872 freshman this fall, the largest number in the university's 48-year history. The majority of the university's students are from Stanislaus, Merced, San Joaquin, Tuolumne, Mariposa and Calaveras counties."That more students coming out of high schools in our region are choosing to start their education at California State University, Stanislaus, is a true indication that this university is serving the higher education needs of this area," CSU Stanislaus President Hamid Shirvani said in a written statement. "This is a remarkable achievement and a significant effort in moving the university to the next level."Meanwhile, state data shows the number of San Joaquin County high school graduates who enrolled in any college in 2004 was 1,000 less than in 2002. The decline followed a steady increase in the late 1990s.
