Goldstone gets human rights award - SABC News
Richard Goldstone, the former Constitutional Court judge, has been awarded the Thomas J. Dodd Prize in international justice and human rights. The prize is awarded bi-annually by the University of Connecticut to an individual or group who has made a significant effort to advance the cause of international justice and global human rights. Goldstone was awarded the prize for his work as a former prosecutor at the International Criminal Tribunal. He shares the prize with Louise Arbour, who is currently the high commissioner for human rights in the United Nations. The two prominent human rights lawyers accepted the award by warning that some democracies are over-reacting to the threat of global terrorism at the expense of human rights. During an interview, both said that they were concerned about new anti-terrorism laws being considered around the world. Both Goldstone and Arbour say they believe governments may use the threat of terrorism as an excuse to interfere with courts and restrict the rights of minorities in their societies. The award of $75 000 will be shared between the two.
