Reason For Nursing Shortage Surprise You - WMDT
Susan Battistoni has been a nursing professor at Salisbury University for more than 20 years. She says enrollment in her program is higher than it's ever been. "The clinical facilities are just saturated with nursing students." But in the same breath she acknowledges a nationwide nursing shortage that's pushing states like Maryland to look overseas for nurses. "There've been like a couple hundred imported from the Philippines. We've imported nurses from India to help meet our demand," Battistoni said. She says it's not that Americans don't want to be nurses; US schools just don't have the resources to meet the demand. "Virtually every program has upped their enrollments to try and address the demand, but the demand is greater than what we're putting out," Battistoni said. Delaware Congressman Mike Castle also knows what's behind the shortage. During a speech at Beebe Medical Center he cited the 32,000 US students who were turned away from nursing schools last year. When he was finished, he promised the hospital $250,000 dollars to expand its nursing school. He hopes his colleagues on Capitol Hill follow his lead. "Washington needs to pay attention.
