Leaving banality, but not evil, out of cigarettes - Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (subscription)
TACOMA, Wash. — Many years ago, when Chicago was full of sailors and soldiers headed for the battles of World War II, a pretty, bright, dark-haired teenager by the name of Mary Angela Gaughan lived in that big and busy city. I didn’t know her then. Couldn’t have, actually: She was my mother, and I came along much later, after she met and married a veteran who’d come back from Europe. I do know that she had a seraphic face, a fine sense of humor and a way of breaking into her own sentences with a nervous titter, because these things were still with her when I was growing up. She graduated with high honors from Mundelein College in Chicago, earned a master’s degree in chemistry and taught for a while at the University of Illinois. I used to wonder why I didn’t inherit her chemistry gene when I was battling the subject at the University of Washington, but that’s getting ahead of my story. Honestly, it’s not a story I want to tell. It awakens memories I’d rather keep buried much deeper than she is buried.
