Tuition break considered for some out-of-state students - Southern Standard
CHATTANOOGA (AP) — University of Tennessee system officials are again talking about offering lower in-state tuition rates at their campuses to students who live just over the line in bordering states.University of Tennessee officials say the move would boost enrollment at their campuses.University of Tennessee at Chattanooga officials predict 100 nearby out-of-state students would immediately enroll if they were eligible for the lower in-state tuition rate.One such person is Crystal Clark, 25, who attends Northwestern Technical College in Rock Spring, Ga. She lives in Ringgold, Ga., just outside Chattanooga, which is closer than Dalton (Ga.) State College to the south."It's closer for me to go to UTC than to go to Dalton," Clark said. "I think there would be a lot of people that would take advantage of that."UTC officials have backed in-state tuition for nearby out-of-state students for years, including trying to get state legislators to write such a program into law.University of Tennessee system trustees would have to approve the change before it could be offered."I'm open to considering on a campus-by-campus basis," trustee Susan Richardson Williams said.
