Howard Zinn comes to the Valley to voice his newest novel - The Massachusetts Daily Collegian
In the '50s and early '60s, Zinn served as chairman of the department of history at Spelman College, one of the schools that make up the historically black colleges of the Atlanta University Center. During this time, Zinn participated in the growing Civil Rights movement in the United States, eventually getting fired from his position for siding with students on an issue at odds with school administration. It was during this time that Zinn was involved with one of the more known civil rights groups of the era, SNCC (Student Non-violent Coordination Committee), and it was also this time Zinn saw as some of the most "interesting, exciting, and educational years" of his life. Zinn was hired as a professor at Boston University in 1964 (where he is now Professor Emeritus) and also took part in garnering public support for the end of the Vietnam War, including making a diplomatic trip to Hanoi to meet with North Vietnamese leaders which resulted in the release of three U.S. prisoners of war.
