'HO HO, HUM' - Jamaica Observer
Queen Latifah isn't called "Queen" for nothing. The rapper-turned-actress usually has a commanding presence in her entertainment exploits and in her latest film, Last Holiday, the New Jersey native fares just as well. Not that she does anything special, but the Academy Award nominee (Chicago) is the main reason that this latest Hollywood remake is made a bit more than tolerable. Without a jolly holiday serving of "Ho ho hos", Last Holiday is not as fun as Bringing Down The House, but the film serves up more laughs than Latifah's other recent outings, The Cookout and Beauty Shop. Last Holiday is a remake of 1950 film of the same name that starred the late Alec Guiness (aka "Obi Wan Kenobi" of Star Wars fame). In that film, he played salesman George Byrd who finds out that his remaining days are numbered. The 2006 version falls in line with this premise but (along with other differences) instead inserts a female lead to embark on a 'last holiday'. Thus "George" becomes "Georgia" and Queen Latifah becomes a saleslady who decides to 'live-it-up' in her last days.
