Ag Hall of Fame to induct dairy pioneer - St. Thomas Times-Journal
Friday February 03, 2006By Times-Journal Staff An Elgin farmer whose work helped ensure pre-eminence of the Holstein breed in the Canadian dairy industry, will become the 28th person to be inducted into the Elgin Federation of Agriculture's Hall of Fame. President of the Elgin Holstein Club from 1929 to 1932 and, later, national president of the then Holstein-Friesian Association of Canada in 1954, Norman R. Martin was a pioneer promoter of the black-and-white cow. Martin, who died in 1955, is to be inducted Saturday during an annual dinner held by the Elgin Federation of Agriculture. Though the Holstein-Friesian breed was introduced in 1881 to Canada, the Dutch cow at first was ridiculed by many dairy farmers. But, today, with scientific herd advancement through measures such as breed classification introduced in the 1920s, the popularity of the breed has grown to the point where Holstein Canada estimates 95 per cent of all dairy cattle are either purebred Holsteins or have distinct Holstein characteristics. Martin and his sons, Bob and Jud, received their Master Breeder shield in 1955.
