High Tech: Hands-on classes teach students real-life skills - Dekalb Daily Chronicle
For some students, Fleetwood's lessons in drafting and architecture, electricity, metals and woodworking are their first steps toward careers in the trades.“A lot take (the courses) because they're not planning on going to four-year colleges,” Fleetwood said. “For the students that go on to technology school or apprenticeship programs, this would be helpful.”Nelson Hillquist, a sophomore, said students would lose out if the school didn't offer these classes because they give students more choice about how to spend their days. Also, they prepare students for futures in industries like auto mechanics, which Hillquest would like to pursue.For sophomore Kurt Sanderson, Fleetwood's welding class that he's taking this semester confirmed his interest in the craft.“It's good to have classes like this that teach you what you're going to use in life instead of other stuff,” said Sanderson, who intends to attend Kishwaukee College to become a professional welder.
