ROCKFORD — About 100 Rockford School District teachers and counselors toured manufacturing plants Friday that ranged from job shops with just a handful of employees to Loves Park’s Woodward Governor Co. with more than 1,000. No matter the size, the message was the same: We need workers.“There’s so much focus about losing jobs overseas, but those are low-skilled and medium-skilled jobs,” said Steve Yagle, president of tour stop Reliable Machine Co. of Rockford and head of the Rockford Chamber of Commerce’s Education Outreach Committee.“The thing we look at is called the ‘2010 Melt Down.’ There are 79 million baby boomers in industrial occupations, and they are going to begin retiring. Generation X is just 40 million people. We are going to be in a world of hurt if we don’t start training that generation.”Those facts come out of Edward E.
