Georgetown College will begin electing its own trustees and no longer will receive funding from the Kentucky Baptist Convention under a proposed agreement that would loosen the ties between the convention and the state’s oldest Baptist college.Under the proposal, the convention will phase out over four years its $1.3 million in annual funding to the college, and the college will have a self-perpetuating board of trustees. Currently the convention elects the college’s trustees, all of whom must be Baptist.Georgetown President William Crouch said more than half of the college’s alumni are non-Baptist and that the school needs to make room for them on its trustee board to raise more funds.The move also came amid some growing tension between some in the convention over how religion should be taught at the college.
