A life that lent itself to poetry leaves a void for some - Newsday
On the Web Read excerpts of Jay Johnson's book BY ROBERT POLNER STAFF WRITER Jay Johnson, who died in an 80-foot fall from a tree he was hired to prune, was no ordinary working man. More than 300 attended his funeral in Huntington Station in December, including relatives, high school classmates, neighbors, poets, musicians, fellow tree cutters and many of his customers, including the repeat client from whose tree he fell. While he was fastidious about his occupation of the past two decades -- self-employed arborist -- he also devoted endless hours to writing and performing poetry in a vivid style reminiscent of another Long Islander, the late comedian Andy Kaufman. Among his varied and avid pursuits, Johnson wrote, sang and played a harmonica for a rock band, boxed to stay in shape, practiced meditation and dabbled in hypnosis. Now that he's gone, many in and around Northport, Huntington and Melville, where he grew up and lived, about a mile from Walt Whitman's birthplace, are feeling the void.
