Editor’s note: Second in a 10-part weekly series examining key initiatives in Somerset County’s comprehensive plan, the first major updates in the blueprint for development in 40 years.Jason Richard knew what he needed most after eight years in the Air Force and a quick stint as an auto mechanic: An education.“It seems to be that you need it to move up,” he said, standing with his backpack outside Allegany College of Maryland’s Somerset campus. “I’m looking to move up.”The Somerset resident is not alone in seeing education as the ticket to achieving his potential.Education and training opportunities are key for the county’s future – both to lure potential businesses and to retain county residents.“Education runs the gamut,” county Commissioner Jim Marker said. “Education itself can be a big job generator, and businesses need an educated work force.”Developing and strengthening partnerships to match education and training with employer needs is one of the key goals in the county’s comprehensive plan. But means for attaining stronger education opportunities are sketchy. “It’s all conceptual,” Marker said. “We are looking for constructive input.”The partnerships focus on working with Allegany College of Maryland’s Somerset campus and the Somerset County Technology Center.Continued expansion of the college - more available
