Volunteer of the week: She's behind Battle of the Bands - Annapolis Capital
Using her contacts in the music and broadcast industry, she has brought together a select group of professionals for a one-time seminar in Annapolis for high school musicians. The all-day event on Oct. 29 at Annapolis High School will have those "in the know" mentoring to the young crowd.Topics will include the business of music, making a demo, marketing, booking a group and writing and composing music. All of this knowledge is offered free to county student musicians courtesy of the Battle of the Bands organization.And in case you haven't been keeping abreast of the music scene in the county, the Battle of the Bands is a highly successful and growing annual event held at Maryland Hall for rock groups from each county high school. Not at all musically inclined herself, Mrs. Almgren said the impetus for the band competition came about through her son, Kristian, currently a college senior studying in Philadelphia. While at Annapolis High School, he was in a band that often practiced in their home.The eighth competition will be held in January 2006, and again feature 12 groups.
