"I'm not exclusively writing my music for other musicians. ... There's this whole thing of academic music versus music in the real world," he says. "Glass didn't write art-on-a-pedestal type music. At Oberlin, the audience would sometimes be the composer and the composer's friends. I learned how to make the audience bigger . . . every project I did was collaborative."
