Mary Martha Lambert - Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (subscription)
HOT SPRINGS — At a recent New York event, Los Angeles filmmaker Mary Lambert encountered a familiar problem. Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., was signing copies of her debut novel, A Time to Run, and Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., hosted the event. Lambert, who is working on a documentary about the 14 female U.S. senators, saw an opportunity. The light was terrible. The setting wasn’t great. But she asked her question anyway, and Clinton graciously answered. That’s the challenge of being a documentary filmmaker, Lambert says. “At a certain point, you have to choose getting what you get or not getting it,” she explains with goodnatured resignation. The 54-year-old knows a thing or two about dealing with politicians. Her sister is Sen. Blanche Lincoln, D-Ark. A slight woman with a wry sense of humor, Lambert grew up in Helena and came to her documentary, 14 Women, with interesting credentials. Her career took off in the mid-1980 s when she was hired to direct one of Madonna’s first music videos. From there, she built a reputation as a premier video director, later jumping to feature films and television.
