Pearl River upends Northeast - Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal
BY CRAIG-ELLIS SASSERSpecial to the Daily JournalBOONEVILLE - Two top 10-ranked giants butted heads Saturday at Keenum Stadium in Booneville - one had to fall.Pearl River Community College, ranked No. 8 in the NJCAA poll, defeated No. 2 Northeast Tigers 27-20 in a highly touted MACJC semi-final playoff game.The Wildcats (7-1) are the two-time defending state champions and the 2005 NJCAA National Champs.The loss is Northeast's first after having a perfect regular season."These are two good football teams. That's all you can say. This is probably the best football game I've ever been involved in my 26 years," said Northeast coach Andy Greening. "Everybody played hard, everybody did a good job, they made one more play than we did, that's all it came down to."Northeast (7-1) wanted to keep Pearl River's offense off the field and play smart on offense. The Tigers accomplished one of those goals, putting up over 300 passing yards against the No. 2 defense in the state.The Wildcats did, however, have 74 plays for 506 yards against a Northeast defense that allowed less than 150 yards per game all year.Standout quarterback Jimmy Oliver accounted for a large part of the Wildcat offense, completing 24 of 49 - more available
