He was one of the country's leading naturalists in his day, and counted the likes of Dr. George Bird Grinnell, William Brewster and Charles Bendire as close friends. He was also an accomplished woodsman, though he shied from the title, reserving it only for those who lived in and wholly made their livelihood from the woods.
