Temples weighing sale of buildings - Asbury Park Press
"It's disappointing to see that two institutions that mean so much to the community are looking to close," said Singer, a state senator, township committeeman and past president of the Ocean County Jewish Federation. "The rumors have been out there for some time that both congregations are struggling. The area has changed. The families have changed."Now the shuls — Yiddish for temples — have to change.Both are prime spaces of real estate in a town that has sustained one of the region's largest building booms in the past five years, according to U.S. Census figures. Both may use that boom to reinvent themselves someplace else.The two synagogues each own half of the square block between Carey and 11th streets and Forest Avenue and Route 9.Congregants and others in the township have speculated the land would be valuable as classroom space for Beth Medrash Govoha, the growing rabbinical college based on Sixth Street, or as high-priced housing.Arlene Schwartz, president of Ahavat Shalom, referred questions on potential sellers to Rabbi Lee Paskind. Paskind declined comment last week.The potential buyers have not been publicly identified.
