Avondale learns value of openness - Arizona Republic
Learning a hard lesson often is painful. But in the end, you are the better for it. We tell that to our children all the time. The advice also applies to school districts, city councils and other governing bodies whose predilection often is to take sensitive matters, or just about any personnel matter that they can get away with, behind closed doors. The Avondale City Council met last month in a secret session to select Marie Lopez Rogers to succeed Ron Drake as mayor. The city attorney had told the council that it was legal under the Open Meeting Law to meet on such an issue behind closed doors. The meeting may have been in technical compliance with the law, but Avondale residents had a strong interest in the discussion and the meeting went against the spirit of the law. The Southwest Valley Republic questioned the secrecy of the deliberations and, in an editorial, criticized the City Council for failing to do the public's business in public. We urged that when the time came to select a replacement for Lopez Rogers, the City Council open the deliberations and discuss the council candidates in public, not behind closed doors.
