The firm was recently awarded what is known as the Roosevelt Stadium Demonstration Project in Union City. The proposed $136 million structure will contain 66 classrooms, an auditorium, and a parking garage, and will have a football stadium on its roof. It will be one of six "demonstration projects" of school construction going on around the state. The stadium, built in 1936, was demolished in 1984. Roosevelt Stadium was located on nineteen acres at Droyers' Point and opened in 1937. It is best known as the stadium where Jackie Robinson became the first African-American to play major league baseball. Acting Gov. Richard Codey and Union City officials broke ground on the new Emerson High in July. "The high school is in the historic shopping zone on Summit Avenue. We tried to be sensitive to the architecture in the area," Capazzi said. The José Martí Middle School Media Center/Public Library is touted by industry magazine School Designs as "the first design of its kind in New Jersey, this media center incorporates the Union City Public Library into the facility."
