Secaucus resident Fatima Griffith said the performance was a community effort to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. All the proceeds after expenses will go to the Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund created by Mayor Dennis Elwell at North Fork Bank on Paterson Plank Road a week after the Gulf States disaster. Elwell said the fund relief fund will be given to a town "somewhere in the South, of similar size and population as Secaucus" before the end of the year. He said close to $10,000 was raised from the performance alone. "After seeing the images and stories on TV, we understand and feel for you [Hurricane victims] and want to help," said Elwell at an introductory speech before Sunday's show. "As Secaucus heads into its second hundred years, we want to promote the wonderful cultural diversity of its members whenever we can." Griffith doubles as a soprano with the New York Consort along with her day job as controller with an investment firm in Manhattan. While she is the contact person in the U.S. for the Madrigal Singers, this was her first time as fundraiser chairperson.
