Pablo Cano makes his way across the rehearsal space unnoticed. The crew of his latest production, The Beginning, is preoccupied with unfurling a stretch of crimson cloth that will serve as lava. The cast is defiant: Jen Rockette, Moon Man, Telephone Lady, Typewriter Man and a few other puppets are resisting their choreography of taps, high kicks and hops. There's also a yellow swirl of foam -- dubbed the Atom Bomb -- that needs to be slow-marched from the back of the stage. It's not easy explaining the history of the universe.In his eighth annual project commissioned by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Cano spins this very story, with the aid of 100 marionette sculptures, six dancers directed by choreographer Katherine Kramer, a four-piece band and a four-man stage crew. The scenario swings from the frenzied clatter of the Big Bang to a future filled with lanky-legged robots. Some might be daunted by folding eons of existence into 45 minutes.
