New online virtual exhibit features Yale professor - Connecticut Jewish Ledger
NEW HAVEN n As a founder of “Ezrat Nashim” a Jewish women’s feminist group, Paula E. Hyman of New Haven was instrumental in the 1983 decision made by the Jewish Theological Seminary to accept women into its rabbinical school.Yet, “Ezrat Nashim” was founded in 1972 -- 11 years before JTS made its decision on admitting women -- by Hyman, members of a study group on the status of women, as well as members of the New York Havurah.“It seemed like a prolonged struggle, but I remember pointing out to my ‘sisters’ that in the context of Jewish history, 11 years was like the blink of an eye,” commented Hyman, the Lucy Moses Professor of Modern Jewish History at Yale University and a prolific writer on the role of Jewish women in a variety of settings.Hyman’s thoughts on “Ezrat Nashim” and its effect on the role of women in the Jewish Conservative movement can be viewed on “Jewish Women and the Feminist Revolution,” a new online virtual exhibit developed by the Jewish Women’s Archive (JWA), a national, non-profit organization in Brookline, Mass. whose goal it is to “uncover, chronicle, and transmit the rich legacy of Jewish women and their contributions to - more available
