HOCKEY EAST JOURNAL - New England Hockey Journal
By Jason Eselunas The University of Vermont opened its first season as a member of Hockey East in style. The Catamounts captured the Nye Frontier Classic in Anchorage, Alaska with a pair of wins. Friday they went to overtime against Michigan Tech, prevailing 4-3 when senior Brady Leisenring scored his second goal of the game 34 seconds into the extra period. It was the first season-opening win for the Catamounts since the 1996-97 season. Saturday, they won the hardware by blanking hosts Alaska Anchorage, 2-0. Vermont became the third Hockey East team ever to win the tournament, following Maine in 1987-88 and Boston University in 1999-2000. Vermont was without head coach Kevin Sneddon, as he and his wife were awaiting the birth of their first child. Assistant coaches Damian DiGulian and John Micheletto filled in.
