Developers say new rules won?t work - Santa Fe New Mexican
“Not achievable.” That’s the way the Santa Fe Area Home Builders Association described a proposal that would require most developers to sell 30 percent of new homes in Santa Fe County at certain prices in the name of increasing affordable housing here.Santa Fe County is scheduled to again discuss new affordable-housing rules in a study session today at 3 p.m. in the County Commission chambers.Proponents of the rules disagree with the builders’ group and others who argue that the new inclusionary zoning won’t work.“It’s not like everybody relishes the idea of going to 30 percent, but they can do it, and they know they can do it,” said Lynne Canning, who has studied the issue as a member of the Regional Affordable Housing Task Force. “I know it’s not easy, but I do believe it can be done, and I believe it has to be done.”The County Commission already has held two study sessions on the proposed rules, which were introduced after more than a year of work by a citizen task force and are aimed at offering relief to the region’s high-priced housing market.
