His life after Harvard can be characterized by a succession of moves that would quickly advance his career. He started teaching history in the late 1930s at St. Augustine's College in North Carolina but quickly moved to North Carolina Central University and on to Howard University, eventually becoming the first African-American to head a department at Brooklyn College in 1956 – an event that was announced on the front page of The New York Times.
