Car rules irk some universities? officials - Arkansas Democrat-Gazette (subscription)
The state went after the abuse of car dealer license plates on college campuses, and a few of the state’s schools are getting stuck with the cost. Arkansas State University’s Newport campus has started leasing a car for Chancellor Larry Williams for nearly $2,000 a year from a dealer that in the past would lend a car to the school for his use. And over at ASU’s Mountain Home campus, Chancellor Ed Coulter has turned a sport utility vehicle back to a dealer that was lending it to the school, and Coulter plans to lease one. Neither Coulter nor Williams was pleased with the prospect of his school paying to lease a vehicle for him. “It’s unfortunate that a service that was being provided to higher education institutions at no cost to the institutions cannot be provided now,” Williams said. Coulter’s take: “You can’t help but be totally amused by it. Somebody has got to be over all the rules and bureaucracy and say, ‘The state of Arkansas was receiving wonderful support, and we turned it down,’ and I am sure it is wisdom to somebody.” These are among the changes at the state’s two- and four-year schools that had - more available
