WSCC enrollment sets record - Marietta Times
Washington State Community College is reporting record-breaking student enrollment for the winter quarter, as community colleges become more popular statewide and Ohio’s public colleges and universities report a decline in students. WSCC enrollment is up 9.2 percent compared to the winter quarter last year, with a total of 2,248 students.Full-time enrollments went up 7.9 percent and increased over the fall quarter at the college for the first time since the college moved to its Colegate Drive campus 15 years ago, according to Registrar Mike Whitnable.Retention at the college also improved 11 percent over last winter, with 1,827 students returning.“This is amazing growth,” said Linda Lockhart, WSCC director of marketing. “It’s very rare for any college to have more (full-time) students in the winter than in the fall.”Statewide, community college enrollment grew by 0.4 percent in the fall compared to 2004, while public college and universities saw their enrollment decrease by 0.3 percent, according to an Ohio Board of Regents report.Washington State’s growth during that time was 5.5 percent.The Ohio Board of Regents doesn’t yet have official numbers for the winter quarters.Washington State student Jennifer Naylor, 23, of 1045 Sandhill Road, Marietta, said she’s not surprised that community colleges are a - more available
