Panel to address future of liberal arts education - Marshfield News Herald
If you go What: "Literacy and Civic Life," a forum that will offer residents a chance to speak out on the direction of liberal arts education When: 4 p.m. Tuesday Where: The University of Wisconsin Marathon County Theatre, 518 S. Seventh Ave. in Wausau Cost: The forum is free and open to the public "It's a real opportunity to think about the purpose of undergraduate education and the extent to which it meets the needs of democratic life," said UWMC Dean Jim Veninga. To get the conversation started, UWMC has invited two community leaders and two UWMC faculty members: * Genia Lovett, president and publisher of the Wausau Daily Herald. * Jim Rosenberg, who works in governmental and community affairs for Wisconsin Public Service Corp., and serves on the Wausau City Council and the Marathon County Board. * Mark Brown, a professor of philosophy at UWMC. * Mike Theiss, assessment coordinator and associate lecturer in computer science at UWMC. Rosenberg said a well-rounded education is crucial to society and to individual success. He sees a liberal arts education as a foundation to ongoing learning that never stops.
